Building a Rabbit Cage

Rabbit Cage

Just in case you found yourself being the proud owner of a prize winning rabbit(s) (after attending the state fair), Here are some steps to building a new home for your new pet.

Depending on where you plan to put this new dwelling, in your house, basement, barn or outside you may try different approaches. We decided to put ours in our walk out basement. Rabbits need light, so placing the cage near a window is helpful.

Okay,

Materials needed:

1) 1" X 1/2" 16 gauge wire cage material. It took me three rolls 30" X 10'

2) Bag of wire clips

3) Wire Pliers

4) Wire Snips

5) three 2 X 4 X 10'

6) 2" Screws

7) U shaped fencing nails (to fasten cage to wood)

8) One 30" X 48" Plastic pan (to catch droppings and for easy cleaning)

9) Water Bottle

10) Feeder

11) Pine Shavings

Building: The Base

Cut four 30" 2X4s These will be your legs

Cut four 23" 2X4s These will be your ends and glides for the tray

Cut two 48" 2X4s These will be your runners

Assemble as shown below to form your base (note: drop down 5" for the top of the tray shelf)

Building: The Cage for two

Lay out the wire and cut four 30" X 50" pieces

and three 30" X 30" Pieces

Trim off the ends so you do not get poked

Fasten the sides with the wire clips (I put a clip every two or three spaces apart)

Put the top panel on last.

Building: The Doors

There are many creative ways I have seen people build doors, I did it by cutting a one foot square hole in the side just about two inches up from the bottom of the cage. I then cut another piece from my extra wire material just about 14" x 14" to cover up the hole and I fastened one side with the wire clips, and held it closed with a twisted piece of wire. I plan to get some better fasteners for easier opening and closing.

Adding the Feeder and Water Bottle

You will need to cut a hole large enough to attach your feeder to the side as you see in the picture above.

The water bottle can fit without cutting, but I did cut one square out so I would have more room to maneuver the bottle.

Add your pine shavings to the tray and put your new friend into his/her new home!
