Helping Rabbits or Bunnies Eyes Naturally

It is very common for rabbits or bunnies to get a little cold in their eye. This is called by many names, "nesting box eye" for bunnies, or older bunnies by bacterial infection, conjunctivitis, and many other names as well. However, treating them, is all the same, if you would like to treat them naturally. Knowing how harmful antibiotics are, we did not want to expose our little treasures to the harmful affects of antibiotics.

Symptoms of eye infection include puss in and/or around the eyes, bleeding or swelling around the eye region, and rabbit hair loss around the eyes. The hair loss is generally due to them rubbing their eyes with their paws when you are sleeping. Their eyes are bothering them, so they rub them.

Ingredients:

  • AmbEric Family Farm body butter

  • Sovereign SilverColloidal Silver

  • Tea Tree Oil (We use Young Living, to purchase click on our Young Living link)

  • Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Aloe (pure to drink)

  • Cotton balls

  • Warm-Hot water in a bowl

  • Salt

  • Small Garbage Bag

  • Dried Dandelion Root (optional)

  • Dried or Fresh Raspberry leaves (optional)

  • Raisins (optional)

What to do?

  • Prepare your hot water in a bowl (make sure it is hot enough to dissolve the salt), add the salt to the water.

  • Place your bunny/rabbit on a towel on your lap with all of the other ingredients next to you.

  • Wipe the bunny/rabbits eyes by dipping cotton balls into the water/salt solution (salt is very anti-microbial). Only rub the same part of the cotton ball over your sweet animals eyes once, since the goal is to pull the infection out of the eye....you do not want to re-contaminate the area.

  • Once the eye is cleaned, add 5 drops of Pure Colloidal Silver on the eye, help it penetrate in the eye by pressing lightly with a cotton ball over the area. Colloidal Silver is antimicrobial and has been used for a very long time. See the article on this we posted on our facebook page.

  • Dip a clean cotton ball into the Body Butter (get a generous amount onto the cotton ball) and then rub it over the eye. The bunny/rabbit will not be so fond of this, but, it is very healing and will help dramatically with the healing process. We have tried it without doing this step and the healing did not occur. The ingredients in the Body Butter are very healing.

  • It is important to treat any eye infections immediately as it can turn very serious and blind the bunny/rabbit if not treated quickly.

  • Sometimes this only needs done once, and sometimes it takes about a week or two of going through this process to completely heal the eye. Observe your cuddly one each day and if it is not completely healed, continue to treat your bunny until it is completely healed.

  • Putting a tsp. to a TBSP of the aloe and apple cider vinegar helps a lot for the healing process. So does giving them about 6 raisins a day (this will help them to shed less), which the hairs from shedding are often what causes the irritation in their eyes. Sunflower seeds can cause them to shed more. You can also add dried Dandelion Root to their food as well as Raspberry leaves, this all helps build their immune system to help heal them. This is good for them to have a couple times a year anyway, even without a cold in their eye.
