Why Delay Vaccines and Work On Natural Immunity in Puppies?

Updated: 17 hours ago

Just like with people, keeping our animals healthy begins with their diet and exercise. There is a plethora of information out there discussing vaccines being the cause of many long-lasting health problems, disease, and early death. There is also information about delaying vaccines being best for the puppy. It is a little more difficult to find, but it is out there.

Because people have convictions on both sides of this issue, and many people are not wanting vaccinated animals around their livestock or children, we are opting to go the natural/delayed vaccine route. We feel this is a healthy and educated balance between the two. Once they are home with you, you can choose to do what you feel is the best for your new addition.

After the puppy leaves our home, feel free to vaccinate if that is where your conviction lies. We support your decision either way. From what we are reading, it is best to begin vaccinating after 3 months of age. Before 3 months of age, we keep your puppy away from these risks as much as possible and give your puppy homeopathics called nosodes (which we explain more below), in addition to herbs (for building the immune system), organic healthy whole raw food, diatomaceous earth (for parasites and worms), vitamins such as probiotics/pre-biotics, and colloidal silver to also help build their immune systems.

Until about 12 weeks of age a puppy has a natural immunity from his/her mother. This is given through the placenta, while still in utero as well as through the mother's very nutritious milk, once the puppy is born. Just like a human baby, the longer they nurse, the more quality nutrition they get. Our aim at Verity Farm is to keep momma happy and healthy so she will nurse as long as possible to give her puppies as many nutrients as possible. Having these antibodies, gives the puppies the best chance at a long, healthy life.

When a puppy's immune system is not compromised, but built up with their momma's milk, healthy food, immune system building herbs, and exposure to sickness in small doses, this gives them the best chance at a long, healthy life. They are usually able to build up a natural immunity to sicknesses they encounter. You can always do antibody titer testing to find out exactly what vaccines are best for your puppy to get, based on his/her immune system and natural immunity: https://www.ssacrolla.com/antibody-titer-testing This way it is customized for your new puppy, based on his/her needs.

We combine these practices with Puppy Culture Methods as well as the Empowered Breeder Program to produce the most healthy, well-adjusted puppies that we know how.

You might be wondering what a nosode is? A nosode is described as, "An 'oral vaccine' in the sense that its purpose is to 'immunize' the body against a specific disease. Nosodes can be used in two ways: to protect against disease (called homeoprophylaxis), or as a remedy if the animal becomes ill.

Nosodes are completely safe, easy to administer, and can be given to puppies much earlier than vaccines. Pregnant females can be treated with nosodes prior to giving birth, providing some immunity to their litters before they are born as well.

The major difference between a nosode and an 'orthodox' vaccine is of course the extremely small (if any) quantity of physical substance in a nosode. There are no dangerous chemicals and additives in the homeopathic remedy. Nosodes are given orally whereas core vaccines are injected. When a nosode is given, the body recognizes the cellular structure and disease imprint, producing an immune response similar to actual exposure to the disease itself.

Under most circumstances, nosodes are not needed in adult dogs because most have already built up a strong immunity. The use of nosodes is usually limited to puppies that are younger than 9 months of age or so (each puppy is different). There are, nosodes for kennel cough and heartworm too, which can be given to adult dogs as needed or on a regular basis in certain situations.

Parvo and Distemper Nosodes have been found to be the most effective, especially when started very young. The following schedule may be started at 4-8 weeks of age. We begin this with all puppies at 4 weeks old and the mother is treated with nosodes during pregnancy.

  • Week 1 is the week of the first dose, not the age of the puppy.

  • A dose is 6-8 drops of liquid nosodes given orally.

  • Food should not be given for 15 minutes before or after the dose.

  • You may find marking the calendar helpful in planning and administration.

Dose one: Parvo 30c, give a dose twice this week

Dose two: Distemper 30c, give a dose twice this week

Dose three: Parvo 30c, give a dose twice this week

Dose four: Distemper 30 c, give a dose twice this week

Repeat this regimen until the animal is approximately 9 months of age if you are opting to not vaccinate. This should be sufficient for the life of the dog, but the nosodes may be repeated any time the risk of exposure is high." Information is taken from here.

Nosodes can be purchased here. In addition, here is a supplement list which are known for building the immune system in animals.

Many pet parents are looking for alternative ways to keep their dog healthy because they have either experienced side effects from vaccines or they have read/heard many stories. We just wanted to let you know that there are other options if you feel more comfortable with a different option. There is a growing interest in nosodes, and has come at the same time the efficacy of vaccines is being evaluated.

There have been an increasing amount of studies which show that delaying vaccines can be beneficial in:

  • Reducing the risk of reactions to vaccines. Delaying the initial series can allow the puppy's immune system to mature in order to reduce the adverse reactions.

  • Improving the puppy's immune response. Several studies have shown that by delaying vaccines until 12 weeks of age can lead to a more robust immune response to the vaccine.

  • When vaccines are given too young, it interferes with the mothers antibodies and the vaccines prove ineffective.

We recommend raising your puppy in such a way as to foster building as natural immunity as possible. All pets are different and all pet owners are different. We have found this to be a balance between the two viewpoints.

In addition to nosodes, colloidal silver can be administered to help mitigate any possibility of disease. Here are several articles that tell how to build a natural immunity using colloidal silver:

It is important to research this topic to see what you feel the most comfortable doing. Here are a few books I can recommend:

  • This book is written by a Veterinarian: Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn, DVM, PhD

  • Natural Rearing-Breeding and Raising Dogs the Way Nature Intended by Dr. Jeanette Thomason

    • Acknowledgment at the beginning of this book: "God blessed me with a love and innate understanding of animals and nature from a young age and with a grandfather who instilled the importance of researching and learning all I could about the things I loved and became passionate about. He also blessed me with a mother who loved animals and who made sure I had riding lessons and was able to take my dog to training classes. She and my grandparents paid for my education to go through veterinary technician school. However, working as a veterinary technician opened my eyes to the fact that conventional medicine rarely, if ever, healed the animal. In the majority of cases, it created even more symptoms of disease."

  • The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat by Juliette de Bairacli Levy

Here is a directory of Holistic Veterinarians that also may be of help.

If you choose to vaccinate, we recommend choosing vaccines that do not have heavy metals in them. Generally this is something that you have to request. Doing this will reduce the heavy metal toxins in your puppy.

We hope that this information has been helpful for you. Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
